Hello fellow geeks,
Christmas is as convenient an excuse as any to get some new gadgets but is one of the few occasions when there is absolutely no need to justify any acquisition. ![]() So in this spirit, what's everyone wishing for this christmas? ... besides world peace, end of corruption/sickness/etc. of course. For me it is mostly photography accessories, something new I recently started to explore. There's the Eye-Fi Pro, a comfy neck strap, new lenses, tripod, monopod, oh and I also wished for a MiFi. my list is online at amazon.co.uk (not that i expect you to get me anything but I certainly wouldn't judge you if you did ): http://j.mp/gf-wishli...your turn please. dangerously enough we will all get some inspiration to extend our own lists in turn. |

Yes I'm interested in photography too, mainly because it looks like I lost my trusty Canon digital camera that I bought back in 2002.
It had an amazing feature back at that time that it could could do 640 x 400 video at 15fps for a 30 second clip, though it required a "high speed" compact flash. The appropriate Kingston 256 MB card was a bargain in Hong Kong and only cost me approx £120! Earlier this year I was in Singapore and went into one of those fancy department stores in search of a new battery for it. When I showed the guys are the camera counter the battery they wanted, they seemed to think they were looking at a museum piece. Incredibly they pulled a big box batteries from under the counter, and after some searching found two that matched. They gave them to me for no charge, presumably out of pity. Anyways the biggest problem with the camera was that when you press the button to take a photo, it can take a second or two before it actually does. By this time the moment you wanted to catch has long past. So one of my biggest priorities is to find a compact camera that takes a photo when you press the button! A colleague at work got a new Panasonic Lumix TZ7 today. Looks pretty nice, has a 12x optical zoom, lets you zoom while taking video, has pretty good reviews though apparently the battery life is pretty crap. If anybody has a recommendation, I'd love to hear it! |

BTW, I recommend putting the D700 on your wish list - the D700 can basically take photos in the dark! Well not quite, but in low light situations say in a poorly lit restaurant you can take a photo without a tripod or flash and the quality is amazing. My brother has one, and so does somebody at work and they absolutely love it.

Yeah the D700 is pretty impressive but it would mean to cross over to the full frame range of cameras and at present I'm not sure that I'm in this long term enough (all indicators point to yes though).
Another consideration was that all the lenses I'm acquiring until upgrading would be for the DX format so what will I do with everything? Keep the D60 + lenses for certain occasions when the D700 is not appropriate? But when would that be? When someone steals my D700? Or sell the D60 cam and lenses. I guess I will cross this bridge when I get to it. For the next few months I will mess about and practice and see how much longevity photography has for me as a hobby. |

Read an in depth review of the D700 and looked at some prices of lenses for that cam and ... well I won't shoot for it in a long time, the D300s or D5000 will suit me just fine as an upgrade to my D60 when the time has come.
